Pendragon Translates to head dragon and is the surname of the legendary King Arthur and his father Uther. but like most myths this one is rooted in the stars particularly the Pole star or Axis Mundi the symbolic center of the world or still point for which all the other stars revolve. Up until 4,000 ish years ago this axis was the star Thuban in the Constellation Alpha Draconis, thus Head dragon; before it moved to become the star Polaris in the constelation Ursa Minor, the Bear which is the root of the name Arthur.
Beyond the Pendragon. Dragons are one of my favorite subjects since I was a boy both in art and mythology. They are extremely multifaceted and ambiguous as symbols. They can represent, The unification of the 5 elements, transcendent consciousness, power, sexuality, life force energy, luck, Knowledge but also greed, the ego, sloth (cold blooded )and apex predators. In alchemy the dragon is considered the volatile but animating life force or spirit which must be tamed not slain. and when this is done the Dragon becomes the greatest boon to the alchemist in question. but beware the same power that can heal can also destroy and devour the alchemist who’s magic has fallen into sorcery.causing them to exhibit the negative traits and in doing so that is to say when The Shadow of the dragon takes over the personality to certain tangible extents, the dragon slayer may indeed have to be called for.
In Astrology the Head and Tail of the dragon are symbolic of the Moon and its Nodes ( points of accession and dissension in context to the ecliptic.) The tail or South node represents ones Karma ones past lives, family, early life, comfort zones and where they are from. While the Head represents ones destiny, places and paths of growth and evolution. the two are always directly across from each other in the zodiac, and they are both personal to ones specific chart as well as macro cosmic forces that are at work in our day to day lives, Currently the tail of the dragon is in Analytical Virgo and the Head is in Mystical Pisces.
